Dataset: The Danish Time Use Survey

Abstract

Introduction to the Danish Time Use Survey from 2001

The Danish Time Use Survey from 2001 aims to provide information about men and women's time use in 2001. The survey includes 2.105 people 16 to 74 years old as representative of the Danish population. The design of the survey follows the guidelines developed by an expert group in Eurostat (2000).

A preceding questionnaire was given to Danish households. In households with a married or cohabiting couple, data were collected for both spouses. The questionnaire includes information about:
· working hours,
· household work,
· incomes,
· family background,
· attachment to the labour market,
· job-characteristics,
· domain satisfactions,

In addition to a questionnaire-based interview, each person received two diaries - one for a weekday and one for a weekend day - and each spouse likewise received two diaries for the same days. The respondents completed the time-use diaries, noting the main and secondary activity information for each 10-minute interval of the actual day. The diary covers working hours, household work and leisure time.
